After a shortened season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Monroe Bearcats returned in fall 2021 with a new cast of players. Led by the versatile Cole Pruett, RB Kody Edelbrock, and sophomore QB Blake Springer, the young Cats had a rough start to the season after dropping games against Ferndale and Glacier Peak. After the losses, Coach Scott Darrow made adjustments to the team as they rebounded with a blowout victory against Lynnwood. The Bearcats won the next three of four games by large margins, leading to an important showdown with Snohomish for the WESCO 3A South title. Snohomish took a 19-0 lead before Monroe slowly erased the deficit. The Bearcats won in overtime to set up a rematch with Ferndale for the conference title. Traveling up to Blaine, the Bearcats fended off Ferndale to capture their first WESCO conference title since 1991. Despite having their season ended by Lakes, the young Bearcats displayed resolve in a wildly successful season.
