After three straight county titles, expectations for the 1929 season ran high as the Bearcats were finishing one of their most successful decades in team history. With returning talent and the new coach Ted Bankhead, the ‘Cats began the year looking strong in their first two games. Despite the start, cracks began to show as Stanwood and Edmonds both ran over the Bearcats in two blowout losses to even the year at 2-2. These games showed that the defense, a valuable asset that keyed the championship runs over the last few years, wasn’t up to par this season. Monroe rebounded with wins against Arlington and Marysville that set up a winner take all matchup against the undefeated Snohomish Panthers. Snohomish would avenge the last few years of defeats by the Bearcats as the Panthers crushed Monroe 46-0 to capture the county title. Even with a humiliating defeat, Monroe closed out the season with a victory against Issaquah to finish the year at 5-3.
