Coming off a difficult 2-5 record in last year, Coach Bates and the Bearcats regrouped in 1939 to post a mediocre 3-3-1 record. The Bearcats started the season looking sharp with a 2-0 record, which included a 25-0 beatdown of Sultan. This start brought optimism and the Bearcats looked poised to make a run for the county title. Conference play started with a loss to Marysville but the ‘Cats came back the next week with a rout of Arlington to stand at 3-1 record and still very much in contention for the championship. Back to back losses to Edmonds and Snohomish eliminated the Bearcats from the title chase and they ended the season with a tie against Ferndale.
