Despite the tough 2-5 record the previous year, Coach Bates had one of his finest seasons at the helm of the Bearcats in 1936. After easily defeating the Everett 2nd team and Sultan, the Bearcats matched up against a powerful Marysville squad in a decisive game. Monroe would fall 18-0 but this wouldn’t slow down the juggernaut that was the Bearcats that season. Marysville would be the only team that scored on the Bearcats as the defense posted seven shutouts, not only the key for success that season but also one of the finest defenses in team history. The Bearcats won the next three in a row before tying Edmonds and finishing off the year with a dismantling of East Stanwood. Despite the lone blemish against Marysville, the team posted a spectacular 6-1-1 record which was their best of the decade and the best since 1928.
