Expectations for the Bearcats and Coach Stahl following a championship season the year before were sky high in 1953. The Bearcats did little to dissuade the excitement as they started out 3-0, beating their opponents handily in each game. The first test of the season came when the ‘Cats traveled up to Oak Harbor for an important league matchup. Oak Harbor dominated Monroe in this game as it was clear that the magic of ’52 was gone. The Bearcats dropped a game against Lake Stevens and tied Concrete, all but eliminating the chance at another conference title. Nevertheless, the Bearcats were able to crush Sultan 35-6 the next week, avenging their loss at the hands of the Turks which cost them a perfect season last year. The team would finish the year 5-3-1, a good record but far from their lofty expectations.
