Cliff Gillies had big shoes to fill in his first season as he was tasked with replacing the successful Coach Stahl and continuing a winning tradition. Coach Gillies quickly showed his talent as head coach, leading the Bearcats to a very successful campaign in 1955. The ‘Cats started out white hot with four wins and a tie to begin the season, looking like the team to beat in the league. The offense was strong at first but the defense was electric all season long, pitching shutouts in four of the first five games. After a 27-0 rout of Darrington, the Bearcats looked poised to capture a league title when the offense suddenly collapsed after a loss to Oak Harbor, eerily similar to the season before. The defense still held strong but couldn’t carry the entire team. Defeating Lake Stevens the next week, it would be a 7-0 loss to Concrete that effectively ended all hopes of a championship. The ‘Cats then met up against an undefeated Sultan in the last game of the season but couldn’t play spoiler for the Turks. Sultan defeated Monroe to capture the league championship, a crushing end to the season but still promising for Coach Gillies and the Bearcats going forward.
