After narrowly missing a chance at a title, the 1956 Bearcats came in with a lot to prove and a chip on their shoulders. The ‘Cats started off strong in their first five games, only dropping a non-conference game against Bothell and winning the rest convincingly. The Bearcats then met Oak Harbor in a game that pitted the best teams in the conference against each other. Oak Harbor came into the game with two wins and a tie league play while the Bearcats had a perfect 2-0 mark. The game ended up being a defensive clinic as neither team could muster a score and the match ended in a 0-0 tie, leaving Monroe in control of their own destiny the rest of season. The ‘Cats won their next two games to stay in the lead as they met up against Sultan, seeking vengeance for their defeat that gave Sultan the title last season. There would be no upset this time as the Bearcats demolished the Turks in a 51-6 beatdown, crowning themselves as conference champions and ending one of the most memorable seasons in program history.
