After two mediocre seasons to start his time at Monroe, Coach Lucero led the Bearcats to an outstanding 8-2 record with the 1973 squad. The season started out very strong as the ‘Cats stood at 6-1, the only loss being a non-conference matchup against Lake Stevens. While the offense preformed well, it would be the defense that carried the team as the Bearcats recorded five shutout victories. With title hopes close at hand, the ‘Cats had their dreams dashed when Stanwood upset them 17-0. Despite losing their chance at a conference title, the Bearcats still played hard the rest of the season, posting back to back shutouts of Lake Stevens and Burlington-Edison to conclude a strong campaign.
