Despite finishing with a respectable 5-4 record in 1977, the Bearcats took a step backwards the next season. The year started out with some optimism as the ‘Cats looked strong in their victories such as a 37-6 romp over Lake Stevens and a 42-6 beatdown at Stanwood. However, losses to Burlington-Edison and Sultan made for a suspect 3-2 record halfway through the season. Sure enough, the team imploded in the second half of the season as the offense was held in check and the defense simply fell apart. Monroe lost five in a row to end the season 3-7, a dismal finish to the year. The 1978 season would be the last time that Monroe and Sultan played against each other, a once classic annual rivalry now dormant for over 40 years.
