🡐 1980 Season 1978 Season 🡒

After a few mediocre seasons, the 1979 Bearcats closed out the decade with a strong 7-4 season. The ‘Cats displayed a strong offense and an even more impressive defense that produced a 6-2 mark at the end of the regular season. The best wins came against Anacortes and old rival Lake Stevens and the only losses were against Burlington-Edison and Ferndale. As the regular season ended, Monroe ended up in a three way tie for second place in the Northwest AA division with Burlington-Edison and Bellingham. A convoluted series of tiebreaker and playoff games followed as the tiebreaker games were limited to two quarters and 20 minutes in length. In the first game, the ‘Cats defeated Burlington, avenging their loss earlier in the season. In the second game, Bellingham narrowly beat Monroe 7-0. Because of the loss, the Bearcats went up against Sedro-Woolley in a “playoff” game to decide seventh place in the conference. Monroe would once again fall in a hard fought game, disappointingly ending the season in eighth place.
