After years of underachievement and struggle, Coach Nowadnick led the Bearcats to a breakout season in 1986. It would be their finest season since 1974 and jump-started an era of dominance in Monroe not seen in years. The ‘Cats dominated much of their competition throughout the season on both sides of the ball, the only blemish on the season being a loss at Lake Stevens in week three. After defeating Shorecrest 21-6 to end the regular season, the Bearcats stood at 8-1 before entering the first round of the state playoffs against Burlington-Edison. It was Monroe’s first appearance in the state playoffs and enthusiasm filled the community. Sadly, the ‘Cats couldn’t fend off a strong Burlington team and fell 31-0 to end a magical season with an impressive 8-2 record.
