For the 1987 Bearcats, a breakthrough season the year before would be a difficult act to follow up. Starting out with losses to Eastmont and West Valley Yakima did not inspire much confidence but Monroe would right the season a close win against Bainbridge the next week. The next week a teachers strike in Lynnwood forced the school to forfeit the game to the Bearcats and they would also win their next two against Edmonds and Meadowdale. Despite dropping a close game to rival Lake Stevens, the ‘Cats ended the regular season on a strong note with back to back wins as they clinched a share of the WESCO conference title. Monroe would go on to face off against Bainbridge again in the qualifying playoff round and came away with a 21-0 shutout, advancing to the first round against a powerful Yelm squad. The Bearcats had their luck run out in this game as they were badly whipped by a score of 62-20, ending another stellar season for Monroe.
