Despite having a less impressive record than the 1988 season, the 1989 Bearcats still produced a successful season to conclude the career of star QB Jason Olson. Monroe started out with two losses to open the new year but quickly regained the initiative after a four game winning streak. The ‘Cats could not maintain the momentum and traded wins and losses to end the regular season with an average 5-4 record. While the team record was not remarkable, Olson garnered a great deal of attention by putting up impressive numbers in his final season at Monroe. Fortunately for the Bearcats, their record was good enough to set them up against Burlington-Edison in the qualifying playoff round. The Bearcats managed to pull off an unlikely upset by defeating Burlington 28-26 on the road to send the ‘Cats to the State Playoffs. Joy subsided quickly as Monroe would have its season ended in the First Round of the playoffs with a decisive defeat by O’Dea in the first round.
